Another Gosport pub set to become a Tesco

REVAMP Madelines is to become a Tesco Express

REVAMP Madelines is to become a Tesco Express

SUPERMARKET giant Tesco has also submitted a planning application to open a store in a former Gosport pub.

Proposals have been sent to Gosport Borough Council’s planning board for a Tesco Express store on the site of the former Madeline’s pub in Forton Road.

Signs on hoardings outside the building say the shop is due to open in early spring.

But the council first has to decide on several applications for a new shop front, cash machine and illuminated signs.

Ward councillor for the area, Cllr Peter Chegwyn, said: ‘Many people living in the area will welcome a new Tesco.

‘The impression I get is that people would like to see it there because it will give them better choice.

‘Hopefully it might even keep some shoppers in Gosport who are now going to Fareham for the Tesco there.

‘It will be good because it has been a long time since we have had a Tesco opening anywhere near the town centre.’

People have until February 7 to submit their comments to the council about the proposals.

Madeline’s closed in October last year.
