Banana tax peeled back

Portsmouth Port said it is not worried about new EU banana rules.

The EU is set to cut its tariff on bananas from Latin America, so the region can compete with Carribean bananas which are not subject to tariffs.

Port importer MMD is responsible for bringing around three-quarters of bananas into Britian, and a ship arrives from the Caribbean every week.

But manager Martin Putman said he does not expect a change in the volume coming into the port.
