Battered shipwreck will teach sea safety

WELL shiver me timbers, that’s no way to treat a boat!
She’s been capsized, filled with holes, and even blown up by the Royal Navy, but it’s all in the name of teaching sea safety.
The Jeannau is Yachting Monthly magazine’s Crash Test Boat, and has been shipped from Hamble Point Marina to London’s ExCeL, where she will be on display at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show next year.
But while it might sound simple to transport a vessel in such a bad condition, Segensworth transport firm PSP really had to push the boat out to make sure she got there in one piece.
PSP managing director Frank Dixie says it’s actually a very delicate task.
He said: ‘When I first saw the footage of the yacht being blown up the last thing I expected was to be transporting it!
‘Because the boat was so delicate, we had to be incredibly careful when lifting it from the hardstanding to the transport vehicle.
‘One small mistake and the whole thing could have collapsed.’
Throughout 2011 Yachting Monthly has run the Crash Test series, in which it has tested textbook methods of coping with disasters at sea.
The second-hand 40ft Jeanneau Sun Fizz 40 finally fell victim to a gas explosion in October, where she was blown up by the navy off the Isle of Wight.
To transport her, cranes were used to lift her onto a specialised trailer, then taken by truck to the London ExCeL. The journey took around three hours, complete with an abnormal load escort.
Once the yacht has completed its appearance at the Tullett Prebon London Boat Show she will be transported again by PSP to Lowestoft.
There she will be worked on by students at the International Boat Building Training College.
The Tullett Prebon London Boat Show takes place between January 6 and January 15.
