RETAILERS in Emsworth have been celebrating a year of successful business thanks to local shoppers.

A year ago, the Emsworth Extracard was introduced in the village in a bid to encourage people to shop in local independent shops.

Over the past 12 months 2,904 cards have been entered into a monthly prize draw, with 12 winners getting £25 in shopping vouchers, plus an ‘Extra’ prize from a different business each month.

Mary Coburn from the Emsworth Business Association organised the event.

She said: ‘This is to celebrate the first birthday of the Emsworth Extracard which has been running for the past year.

‘We thought we would have a second chance draw to have all of the cards from all of 2013 put back into a draw and the winner is going to win 12 different prizes from 12 different businesses.

‘The Emsworth Extracard is a way of saying thank you to businesses for shopping locally and I hope people can see how many different and nice shops there are in Emsworth.’ And Mary said it’s vitally important that people continue to support independent businesses in Emsworth.

‘It’s incredibly important. We really appreciate the regular customers who come back again and again,’ she said. ‘Unless people use their local shops, there won’t be any local shops in 10 years’ time. So, if people like independent shops and the services that they can give then they need to use those local services.’

And Mary said the scheme has gone well.

‘I think it’s been really successful. It’s really just a bit of fun,’ she said.

To celebrate, another draw was held on Saturday with 2,904 cards being entered.

The winner was Diana Mackey from Queen Street in Emsworth.

She has won a hamper of 14 prizes donated by different businesses including a voucher from Leyton Jewellers, chocolates, wine, apple juice, sausages and vouchers for meat from the butchers.

The Extracard is offered by 45 local, independent businesses across Emsworth-including the pubs, cafes, butchers and specialist shops such as the new sweetshop, Bettys Bon Bons, and Leytons Jewellers.
