Entrepreneurs get tips from the star of The Apprentice,

Know what you want from life and go for it. This was the message from Tre Azam, star of the previous series of The Apprentice, who was in Portsmouth talking to students and then governors of Highbury College.

Mr Azam, who was a semi-finalist, spoke about his life so far – and presented an inspirational story of how to succeed in business.

And one of the key requirements was having a plan and knowing where you wanted to head to, but allied to this was having the ability to be flexible. He said: 'You will never have a successful business if you don't know what you want out of life.'

He told the students that finishing their education was important as having qualifications would provide something to fall back on for the entrepreneur if all went wrong.

He spent more time in detention than in class while at school and o managed only two A-levels at college, and spent a little time at university before leaving to become fully involved with the family business, which later went bust.

During his time with the family business he was responsible for installations and sales in the UK and Europe.

Over the next two years he worked with companies such as Shorts Bombardier, BAE Systems, Rover, ASCO Airbus, Rolls-Royce, Penske Racing and many more, and by the time he was 19 had set up the family business in the US.

After watching his family business fall apart, he openly credited the education from the then YTS scheme he embarked on as the key to his current entrepreneurial success.

But he said: 'I realised that had I taken the degree route, I'd have had something to fall back on. I know of three people at university who made more money than bankers. They used their target market.

'If I did it all again I would finish my education first but make sure I could apply all the knowledge.'

He added that delegation and building a good team were also important skills to learn.
