COMMUNITIES secretary Eric Pickles has praised the appointment of a senior minister to tackle the future of Portsmouth’s shipbuilding industry.
Mr Pickles spoke of Michael Fallon becoming minister for Portsmouth during a visit to Somers Town this morning, where he plugged the government’s right to buy council housing scheme.
He said: ‘It’s very good for Portsmouth. Michael Fallon is a very senior minister and well respected in government.
‘I think he will play an important role alongside the city council so that we don’t lose the skills (at the dockyard).
‘It works on two levels. It’s a symbolic gesture but we are providing someone who will bring in his own skill set and contacts with government.
‘It’s about ensuring that there is good, quality jobs.
‘I am sure he will be here (in Portsmouth) on a regular basis.’
