Exhibition proving recession proof as it expands again

DISPLAYS Part of the Seawork show

DISPLAYS Part of the Seawork show

A MARINE exhibition is expanding yet again as businesses clamour to take part.

The Seawork International Exhibition will take place in three large halls at Southampton port between June 25 and June 27, rather than the two it usually occupies.

The expansion follows on from last year, when more boats than ever were moored at the exhibition’s pontoons.

The event is organised by Fareham-based Mercator Media, and attracts 6,500 visitors and exhibitors from across the globe.

The firm’s managing director, Andrew Webster, said: ‘Despite austerity measures across the world, the commercial marine industry, through necessity, continues to go about its business.

‘Being a part of Seawork is now regarded as essential by exhibitors and visitors alike, as it makes sound commercial sense to take advantage of the industry being in one place at one time.’

Seawork is also going to host an official celebration of the 50th anniversary of the rigid inflatable boat.

The event has been chosen for the launch of industry expert Dag Pike’s new publication The Complete RIB Manual.

Stands and vessels at the exhibition will pay homage to the RIB’s 50 years of existence, and Seawork 2013 will have the largest ever number of commercial RIBs on display.

Also at the exhibition, the Defence Equipment and Support team from the Ministry of Defence, responsible for the procurement and management of all boats and small craft under 30 metres will again be using it as an excuse to meet the industry.

The MoD will once again present its procurement programme at the Seawork Conference, which will be held on board Royal Fleet Auxiliary RFA Lyme Bay, moored alongside the Seawork quay.

The Seawork conference programme will also include a workshop which will present and discuss the findings of a research project which was carried out to try and understand how smaller ports can diversify activities and enhance future economic success and stability.
