AN extra bus is being drafted in to prevent more delays at Portsmouth’s park and ride.

More than 100 people queued for a bus over a two-hour period at the service’s terminal building in Tipner earlier this week.

The situation was resolved after the city council brought in extra buses and it has pledged to continue the increased service throughout the summer.

Marc Griffin, assistant head of service for transport, said: ‘We will have an extra bus picking up park-and-ride customers on weekdays and Saturdays for the rest of the summer.

‘Because of the cost involved in operating buses we can’t schedule extra ones until we know there is a sufficient demand, otherwise we risk paying for extra buses to run empty.

‘Now we know the service is proving so popular we have increased the number to make sure visitors can get into Portsmouth as quickly as possible.’

As previously reported, more than 65,000 passengers made use of the transport hub off the M275 in its first two months of operation.

Its popularity has been helped by an introductory price of £2 for all-day parking.
