Fall in late tax returns
HARSHER penalties and an advertising campaign featuring newsreader Moira Stuart have led to a 39 per cent fall in people filing tax returns late.
Some 850,000 people will receive fines of £100 over the next fortnight for failing to submit self-assessment tax returns on time, HM Revenues & Customs said, but this is 39 per cent lower than the 1.4m a year ago.
The number of late returns fell after the advertising campaign and tough new rules on late payment that mean people will face fines even if they do not owe the taxman a penny.
In addition to this, any returns that are three months late will incur fines of £10 a day up to a maximum of £900 and there are further charges of at least £300 if returns are six months or 12 months late.
