Family has high hopes as innovative takeaway opens up for business

COOKING isn’t just a hobby for one Portsmouth family.

Father Kevin Fryer and his son Kevin Junior opened their first Fresh Fast Food Co shop in Kingston Road, North End, on Monday.

The pair have high hopes for the innovative brand – which offers healthy take-aways and deliveries.

Kevin Junior, a University of Portsmouth graduate, developed the idea for a fresh food takeaway while studying entrepreneurship.

He explained: ‘My dad owned a sandwich bar when I was about 14. I worked part-time with him while I was at school and then I went straight into self-employment when I was 16.

‘The amount of money I was earning while I was at school was amazing. I could not believe what I was earning when I was helping my dad with his catering business.’

After dabbling with his family business, and then going to work for another company, Kevin decided to study as a mature student.

‘I started developing this idea to change the concept of fast food,’ he said.

‘I’m quite health conscious myself and when people are busy they want food quickly.

‘Takeaways make you feel heavy and greasy. I saw a gap in the market.’

Having done his research and seen what other cities have to offer, Kevin has been working on the concept for two years, and now thinks he has a winning recipe.

The shop opened this week and serves breakfast and lunch every day.

Orders over £10 can be delivered free of charge.

Among items of the breakfast menu are ‘indulgent’ pancakes, made to order, breakfast muffins and a fruit box.

Lunches, served from 11.30am, include mushroom risotto, curry, a roast box, burger in a brioche bun, and fish pie.

‘We have no sandwich bread on the premises,’ he said. ‘We have a range of baguettes but I made a conscious decision not to have sandwiches.

‘We only use premium ingredients and we use the most expensive baguettes we could find.’

On average, lunchtime meals cost £4.

The team, which includes Kevin Jnr’s brother Matthew Fryer, 21, who is training to be the kitchen’s chef, is planning on opening in the evenings from later this year.

Kevin Senior, who is head of food operations, said: ‘When setting up this business, we felt it was important to support other local businesses, so when it came to ordering produce, we wanted to order from the Portsmouth area to keep food fresh – and the fresher the better.’
