FARMS will be opening their gates to the public to celebrate British farming and food.
The Open Farm Sunday event will see four farms in our area welcome visitors who want to find out more about where food comes from.
Northney Farm, St Peter’s Road, Hayling Island; Barn Farm, Bunns Lane, Hambledon; and Westlands Farm, Pricketts Hill, Shedfield will all hold open days on Sunday.
Hill Farm, Droxford Road, Swanmore, will open on Sunday, July 15. This year is the ninth annual Open Farm Sunday, organised by Linking Environment And Farming (Leaf) an organisation that works to deliver more sustainable food and farming.
Research from Leaf found that one in five people didn’t know that British farms grew apples, a third did not realise iceberg lettuce was grown in the UK and 80 per cent thought aubergines were grown overseas.
Many adults born in the 90s believed that oranges (16 per cent) and bananas (eight per cent) were grown in Britain.
