Gosport group tackling empty shop problem praised

A TEAM set up to improve a struggling high street has won recognition in parliament.

Gosport’s Town Team, which has a fund of £110,000 to spend on the area, won recognition of its council-backed scheme to pay new businesses to move into the town.

Caroline Dinenage, Gosport’s MP, spoke during a debate in Westminster, praising their work while talking about the importance of independent retailers.

Speaking after the debate, she said: ‘Independent shops hold the key to rejuvenating our town centres and revitalising community spirit.

‘I’m proud that the Gosport Town Team is coming up with imaginative ways to breathe a new lease of life into our high street.

‘The empty unit support scheme also offers invaluable help to fledgling businesses who may otherwise not be able to access sites in prime town centre locations.

‘I am always eager to promote the wonderful work being done in Gosport and this week’s debate was a great opportunity to sing the praises of our local Town Team.’

The scheme offers grants of £7,000 to new firms to move into the area. SIC Digital, in High Street, was the first to take up the offer.
