Hundreds apply for jobs at new John Lewis store

A RECRUITMENT drive for the new John Lewis store in Chichester has seen more than 1,300 people apply for 140 jobs.

It means nine people have applied for each job going at the store, which will be one of the retailer’s ‘at home’ branches.

John Lewis refers to its employees as partners, and offers a bonus scheme to reward them all when the company does well.

John Lewis recruitment manager Laura Berry said: ‘The calibre of candidates for our new at home shop in Chichester has been high.

‘We’ve worked closely with the local job centres to ensure we got a good mix of candidates that reflect the local community. Our first shop in Sussex marks an exciting period of growth.

‘We look forward to welcoming these new partners on board and have no doubt they’ll deliver the outstanding levels of customer service John Lewis is renowned for.’

It is another indication of the popularity of jobs in the retail sector working for established names.

Last March, The News revealed 1,500 people had applied for just 50 jobs at the Debenhams store in Fareham.

And today’s news comes shortly after the appointment of Claire Dunkason as branch manager.

She said: ‘This is an exciting time for us and I’m looking forward to working with my new team throughout their training as we count down to opening day in the spring.’

The John Lewis at home shop will be on the Chichester Retail Park, off the A27, and will focus on furniture, furnishing accessories, homeware, home and electrical technology and a small assortment of travel goods and nursery.

Computer terminals in the branch will allow shoppers to browse the rest of John Lewis’ goods.
