Investment is the key to eaterie’s continued success

POPULAR Portsmouth restaurant abarbistro has made it into the pages of The Good Food Guide for the third year running.

The eaterie, in White Hart Road, Old Portsmouth, which focuses on modern British food, has maintained its place in the exclusive guide after receiving its recognition in 2011 and 2012 – and last year winning particular praise for its beer-battered fish and chips.

Karen Moore, who runs the New England-style restaurant with her husband David, said: ‘We are thrilled to win this recognition for the third time.

The Good Food Guide isn’t something you can pay to get in – it’s done purely on merit and we’re delighted to have been chosen again. It is a great credit to the restaurant and our staff that everything we stand for has been recognised by The Good Food Guide.

‘We aim to offer high quality food that is good value for money in a relaxed and inviting atmosphere that suits a wide variety of people.’

The entry praises the restaurant’s ‘friendly vibe’ and mentions the fact Karen and David also run Camber Wines from the tasting room and shop upstairs.

The couple say that although the third Good Food Guide entry is good news for his business and staff, they won’t become complacent.

‘We’re here for the long term and although it is fantastic to receive an accolade like this, we’ll continue to try to innovate and improve what we do,’ says Karen.

‘For example, we also stock more than 200 wines on offer to customers, which is fairly unique for a restaurant outside London, and we’re keen to develop that side of the business further.’

The abarbistro, which overlooks the historic Camber Docks in Old Portsmouth and has views of the Spinnaker Tower, is yards from Portsmouth’s fish market, which supplies a lot of its fish.

Karen added: ‘We have recently put in a new kitchen which gave us a good excuse to give the rest of the restaurant a new look and lick of paint ready for Christmas.’

And she added: ‘Our next project is to extend and refurbish our conservatory area which we will be doing early next year.’
