Partnership with logistics company will open market

PORTSMOUTH’S fresh fruit import specialist MMD Ltd has announced a new transport partnership with a logistics company.

Gregory Distribution Ltd will take over responsibility for distribution of fresh fruit and vegetables handled by MMD Ltd at Portsmouth International Port.

The new contract comes into effect at the beginning of next month.

The family-owned firm started in the south west of England nearly 100 years ago and the Gregory Distribution Group now operates from 17 sites.

It has more than 500 trucks driving 70 million miles a year, 1,500 employees and a turnover of £140m.

MMD Ltd will benefit from the larger scale operation, with experienced MMD staff transferring to Gregory Distribution.

Drivers will continue to work from Portsmouth International Port and will be joined by Gregory drivers from its base in Chichester.

Martin Putman, managing director at Portsmouth International Port, said: ‘We have worked hard to reach a deal with Gregory Distribution that delivers even higher levels of service for customers of MMD, whilst protecting the professional drivers who work tirelessly for our company, which is owned by Portsmouth City Council.

‘It means MMD clients at Portsmouth International Port will now be able to take advantage of a wider distribution network.

‘It will give them an even deeper reach to all markets throughout the UK.

‘The increased vehicle fleet will also allow MMD to take on new contracts with confidence that the enlarged transport operation will deliver the goods.’

Andy Walker, managing director at Gregory Distribution, added: ‘This new arrangement between MMD and Gregory combines the specialist import services and facilities of MMD with the distribution and logistics resources of the Gregory Distribution Group to provide a one-stop solution for importers and fresh produce traders of both companies.’
