BOTTOMS up! The Portsmouth Beer Festival will return to the city in May.

Served up with sounds from the city, cask ales, beers and ciders will be on offer at the two-day festival in May, which will take place at the Guildhall.

Organiser Ben Mills, 28, who runs the Belle Isle in Osborne Road and Little Johnny Russells in Albert Road, has lived in the city all his life.

‘I used to go to the old beer festival every year when it was run by the other organiser,’ Ben said.

‘I went to them last year and asked them about the possibility of bringing it back.

‘They were keen on it so we proceeded. I have run businesses in Southsea for the best part of 10 years. I have put on events in the past and thought it was a good idea.

‘We started discussions and looking at it last year, in early December. We launched it today and we will be shopping around for ales, beers and ciders over the next few weeks, up until the event.

‘I think the festival will be of a similar composition.

‘It seemed to sell out most years but we want to bring a more modern way to things.

‘This is working in close conjunction with a lot of other publicans in the city.’

Publican Stuart Ainsworth said he hopes the beer festival will bring more business in for the city’s pubs.

Stuart, the landlord of the Leopold Tavern in Southsea, said: ‘I have nothing to do with it but I support any beer festivals taking place.

‘It is very good for us at the moment. The weekends are still looking after themselves.

‘It can only be a positive thing. The more you can get people trying these ales and beers the more pubs will get off the back of it.

‘It can only be a good thing that it is taking place on Portsea Island.’

Tickets for the event, which will celebrate craft beers and cask ales at Portsmouth Guildhall, went on sale today.

Beers from local breweries as well as popular breweries around the country will be on show on Friday, May 16 between 6pm and 11pm, Saturday, May 17 from noon to 5pm and an evening session from 6pm to 11pm.

Tickets can be purchased on Portsmouth Guildhall’s website at www.portsmouthguildhall.org.uk/events/portsmouth-beer-festival.

The last beer festival was held in 2010 having been cancelled the previous two years.

The Portsea Island Beer Festival, organised by Irving and Company, returned to the city for its third year at Groundlings Theatre in October.
