Portsmouth pubs given tips on how to deal with violent punters

HAPPY Steve Hudson

PUBS and restaurants are being given helping dealing with problems caused by alcohol.

Workshops are being run for Portsmouth’s night-time venues in the hope that they will get more confident about dealing with problem situations and launch a crackdown on underage drinking.

The all-day sessions, which are being held by The Event Training Centre, include talks on a range of topics and staff can share problems they might have.

Employees from Owens, Drift Bar, both in Palmerston Road, Southsea, as well as The Golden Eagle, in Delamere Road, and Shepherds Crook, in Goldsmith Avenue, Southsea, went along to a session held at The Jolly Sailor, in Clarence Parade, on Friday.

Steve Hudson, owner of Drift Bar and Shepherds Crook, said: ‘My staff thought it was brilliant and were taught how to deal with customers in a professional manner.

‘It also taught them how to be more confident and it backed our alcohol awareness training that we do.

‘Everyone is learning all the time. All the help we can get is great. Thankfully, we don’t get much trouble with violence towards staff but it’s taught them how to calm situations down.

‘Incidents of violent crime at Drift Bar are down year on year.’

Kingsley’s Bar, in Osborne Road, Southsea, and The Slug and Lettuce, in Palmerston Road, are also interested in taking part.

The courses will run until July.

People can choose to take what they’ve learned to the next level and gain an NCFE Level 1 Award in Alcohol Awareness, NCFE Level 2 Award in Conflict Management and an HABC Level 2 Award in Underage Sales Prevention.

The project cost £50,000 and was paid for by Skills Funding Agency.

Simon Hodge, of The Event Training Centre, said: ‘There are issues with alcohol across the country, not just in Portsmouth.’
