‘AN honour and a privilege’ are the words used by the general manager of a lifebuoy manufacturer who met the Queen at a reception for business award winners.

Kevin Rough, general manager of Daniamant Ltd in Airport Service Road, Copnor, and Philip Stubbs, design engineer, were invited to a reception for firms given the Queen’s Award for business innovation.

The sea survival kit manufacturer was one of 39 companies to be recognised this year for its innovation.

The pair met Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace last week along with a number of other members of the royal family.

Kevin said he and colleague Philip ‘thoroughly enjoyed the evening’, where they mingled with other winners of the award, along with The Duke of Edinburgh, The Duke of York, The Duke of Gloucester, The Duchess of Gloucester, The Duke of Kent, Princess Alexandra and Members of Parliament.

He said: ‘The reception was held within two of the picture galleries inside Buckingham Palace and was a fantastic end to celebrate winning the Queen’s Award for enterprise.

‘The whole process from start to finish has been hard work, but an honour and a privilege and all employees at Daniamant should not underestimate the significance of what they have achieved.’

Earlier this month, the firm had a visit from the Queen’s representative, the Lord-Lieutenant of Hampshire, Dame Mary Fagan.

She presented the firm with a certificate signed by the Queen and a domed glass crystal.

The firm, which has 40 employees, opened in 2006 following the sale of another company.

It designs and manufactures a range of survivor location lights including lifebuoy lights for the commercial marine sector.

In particular, Daniamant has been increasing its exports in the United States and the offshore market.

Daniamant was named Exporter of the Year at The News’ Business Excellence Awards in 2013.
