Sausage, pie and ready meal competition returns

MEATY The 2010 Great Hampshire Sausage Competition winners and Hampshire County Councillor Jonathan Glen

MEATY The 2010 Great Hampshire Sausage Competition winners and Hampshire County Councillor Jonathan Glen

A COMPETITION that acknowledges the best sausages, pies and ready meals has returned after a two-year break.

The competition is organised by county food group, Hampshire Fare, and gives butchers and producers a chance to battle it out to be crowned the best.

Pork sausages, meatballs, faggots, black pudding and charcuterie will be judged by a panel of expert judges.

The event was last held in 2010 and attracted 200 individual entries from 30 Hampshire butchers and meat farmers.

Awards and a trophy are presented in each category and the Supreme Champion of 2013 will be selected from across all the entries.

This year’s event will be held at the Holiday Inn in Winchester on Tuesday, April 9.

Mike Wright, chairman of Hampshire Fare, said: ‘Since it was introduced in 2001, this competition has always been extremely popular among our county’s butchers, each determined to prove that their products are the best.

‘The competition highlights the quality and choice available from farm shops, independent butchers and at farmers’ markets.

‘I urge shoppers to encourage their local butcher or farm shop to enter.’

The winners details will be published on hampshirefare.co.uk after the competition.
