South East woodlands to get huge boost
WOODLAND owners in the south east are set to receive a huge boost in the form of a new £10m grant.
The Woodfuel Woodland Improvement Grant (WIG) has been made possible by Forestry Commission England in its effort to revitalise the wood market and meet demand for low-quality wood as a renewable fuel.
With the money, owners will be able to seek professional help in harvesting trees and improve access to their woodlands.
More jobs in the industry will also be created.
Pam Warhurst, Forestry Commission Chair, said: ‘We are delighted with this new scheme.
‘Its key aim is to revitalise the economic viability of sustainable woodland management by helping get timber to market.
‘It will create rural jobs and help grow the green economy.
‘Well-managed woodland can improves the quality of habitats for wildlife.’
