Teenagers on a learning curve
Two young men have started three-year apprenticeships at a local engineering firm.
Mike Smithers, 18, from Stubbington, and 16-year-old Mark O'Brien, from Sholing in Southampton, have enrolled in engineering training courses with Fareham College and are spending up to two days a week at Segensworth-based Turbomeca learning about every aspect of the company's work.
As well as skills training at college, Mark will be undertaking a BTEC in mechanical engineering – Mike has already done this and passed with distinction at PETA. During the final year they will complete their NVQ level 3.
Mentor Simon Hansford, a team leader in the overhaul section, says: 'We move from section to section and staying on top of everything is a constant challenge.'
The expectation is that Mike and Mark will eventually be offered permanent jobs with Turbomeca.
