Vikoma's striking it rich with oil deal
A £1m deal has been struck by a local firm to help Kuwait's oil refineries clean up their act.
The tiny oil-rich state's Kuwait National Petroleum Company has chosen Isle of Wight-based Vikoma to supply equipment which will help three of its refineries to separate oil from other waste fluid.
The move is part of a refurbishment of the refineries, and the company's giant skimming wheels will be fitted to tanks in the refineries to recover the top layer of oil. It helps protect oil from seeping into the surrounding environment, and recovers it so it can become usable again.
It comes on the heels of a 400,000 deal with Qatar for floating oil booms, which help contain spills in the event of an emergency – the main line of business for the thriving firm.
The Cowes company was once part of international oil colossus BP, which founded it after the Torrey Canyon catastrophe in 1967.
It since split from BP and moved to Cowes, where it employs 61 workers and turns over around 10m.
Speaking on a line from Kuwait, Fergus Perry, Middle East sales manager, said: 'We're about a 10m per annum company, and this is a 1m deal, so obviously you can do the maths. It's a very good order and we were happy to have won it.'
