Yard helps get racers ready

THEY’VE been racing for six days, battling high seas and shattering winds.

And three of the skippers who are racing in this year’s Vendee Globe chose a Gosport boat yard to have their yachts overhauled ready for the event.

Gosport’s own Alex Thompton chose Endeavour Quay to service his boat Hugo Boss, while Mike Golding, based in Southampton, sent his boat Gamesa there too.

The race’s first Polish skipper, Zbigniew ‘Gutek’ Gutkowski, also sent his boat Energa there.

The Vendee Globe is a single-handed, non-stop, circumnavigation that sees twenty skippers attempt to take their 60 foot yachts as fast as they can around the planet.

The boats left Les Sables D’Olonne, France on Saturday, and several have already been plagued with trouble, from fishing trawler collisions, to keel loss and even damage from their own race support vessels.
