By-election date set to replace late Havant councillor

THE date has been set for a by-election following the death of a councillor.

Frida Edwards died in December following a short illness.

Councillor Edwards represented Bondfields ward in Leigh Park.

She was the first black councillor on Havant Borough Council.

Now the council has announced that the by-election is to be held on Thursday March 3.

Nominations for candidates have now been submitted with the following people standing:

n Tony Berry – Labour

n Catherine Billam – Liberal Democrat

n Lance Quantrill – Conservative

n Geoff Whiffen – Ukip

The person elected will be in place for the remainder of the standard four-year term of office for a councillor – until May 2018.

They will serve alongside the other councillor elected to that ward.

Anyone eligible but not currently registered to vote has until midnight on Tuesday, February 16, to register if they wish to vote in the by-election.

Anyone already registered but who wants a postal vote has until 5pm on Wednesday, February 17 to submit an application form, which they can get by emailing [email protected]
