CAMPAIGNERS who fought to save children’s centres last year have expressed their shock that more than 100 Sure Start staff have lost their jobs.

Co-founder of Save our Children’s Centres Hampshire Catherine Ovenden said: ‘This was one of our greatest fears and what we were trying to prevent happening.

‘Hampshire County Council promised us that there would be no loss of front-line staff.

‘They have broken that promise by outsourcing the service to providers who are unable to comply with the financial restraints of the budget given to them.’

Action for Children was given the contract to run Sure Start centres in much of the county, including East Hampshire, Gosport and Havant in March.

And she added SOCC Hampshire fully supported Unison lodging a tribunal claim on behalf of the staff who have lost their jobs.
