ENVIRONMENTALISTS have welcomed a government review that appears to safeguard wildlife oases like Langstone and Chichester Harbour.
The RSPB has welcomed the findings of Defra’s review of the Habitats Regulations, which protect beauty spots and nature reserves.
Green groups were concerned as critics said these environmental protections were a drain on the economy.
But the review restates the government’s support for the Birds and Habitats Directives and argues these environmental safeguards do not hinder economic development.
Sam Dawes, from RSPB South East, said ‘It’s excellent news. The government has now accepted that there’s no evidence that these regulations place costs on business.’
