Cyclists are shipshape for charity ride
A charity bike ride sets off next month to raise funds for a sailors' charity.
Local businesses are taking their places for the Deloitte and Sailors' Society Cycle 2009 in aid of the Sailors' Society that supports seafarers who have spent months away from their homes and families.
Among the determined bikers will be 12 employees of Blake Lapthorn solicitors at North Harbour, Portsmouth.
Sarah Peacock, an employment solicitor at the firm, is one of the 12 that will be getting on her bike for the charity.
She said: 'I think it is something that we felt we wanted to do and to get as much money for this charity as possible. The Sailors' Society is different from the normal charity that you hear about to do with cancer or animals or children. It helps to enrich the lives of seafarers, and I am hoping that this will raise awareness of their cause.'
She added: 'I am looking forward to being part of a group. I am hoping to raise about 300 personally but the firm itself should raise a lot more than that.'
Cyclists have the option of legs of 10, 25, or 45 miles across the Hampshire countryside – or a two-and-a-half-mile family ride to the dockhead in Southampton.
Sarah has decided to go for the 45-mile option, but is not worried about the gruelling challenge. 'I do a lot of cycling anyway and cycle most weekends. I will probably increase my mileage to 25 to 30 miles nearer the time to prepare, though,' she said.
The cycle ride will begin on May 10 at the Mayflower Park, Southampton, and there are still places available.
Jan Webber, director of fundraising and marketing for the Hampshire branch of the Sailors' Society, said: 'We're incredibly grateful to all the volunteers and participants for this event but we still need more.
'There is still plenty of time to arrange team and individual entries and to commit to a day of entertainment and gentle exercise for a worthy cause.'
