Festival attracts 1,000 players

MORE than 1,000 children from 13 different clubs attended he 29th Havant Annual Mini-Rugby Festival – proof rugby at mini and junior level is enjoying a real surge in popularity.

The under-sevens saw a very high-scoring match eventually won by Havant 10-9 against Alton. This was real end-to-end stuff but the young Havant side underlined why they are also county champions this season.

In the under-eights, a local derby saw US Portsmouth edge out Havant 7-4 after two of the host clubs met each other in one of the semi-finals.

The under-nine final was another local derby, this time between Havant and Portsmouth – Portsmouth taking a very tense final 2-1.

The under-10 final saw a win for Redingensians – a strong Berkshire club – against Havant.

Havant under-11s were at last victorious after being the 'nearly team' all season, losing final after final and getting knocked out of the county championship semi-finals on the toss of a coin.

The under-12 final saw Havant again triumph. They defeated Ivybridge 5-0 and on the way to the final, Christian Roberts and his outstanding team scored a further 24 tries.
