Gary's in race against crime

A policeman is taking fighting crime to a whole new level and will soon be donning his running shoes to raise funds for the charity Crimestoppers.

Detective Sergeant Gary Cable, who works at Fratton Priority Crime Unit, decided to run the London Marathon after learning that the organisation needed funds to keep going.

This time last year the 37-year-old father-of-two didn't run at all. But in the past 12 months he has caught the bug and has been challenging himself more and more, having recently run the Great South Run.

In preparation for the London Marathon he has been training with the Portsmouth Joggers, running 10-12 miles two or three times a week.

He said: 'I want to send out the message that Crimestoppers is a charity. People associate it with the police but it is separate.

'People are self-conscious about ringing the police, so Crimestoppers just gives them another avenue. It also offers cash rewards.'

Crimestoppers is a charity which helps the police in solving crime – from supporting victims to helping to identify offenders and retrieve stolen property.

Det Sgt Cable hopes that his marathon will increase awareness of what it does and help to raise the funds it needs to keep going.

He added: 'I have been a police officer for 16 years and use Crimestoppers a lot. I didn't realise until recently that it was a charity and run voluntarily.

'Because I work with the drug and burglary unit I am on the other side of the Crimestoppers information. But when I looked behind that at what it actually does, I was very impressed. I want to encourage other people to help.

'A couple of months ago it ID'd 20 most-wanted criminals and through that we have traced quite a few.'

Det Sgt Cable has been given a Golden Bond place from Crimestoppers for the marathon and hopes to raise 1,200. He is the only person in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to be running for them on April 26.
