Help us keep Portsmouth as heart of the navy

The fight starts here. Portsmouth Naval Base is facing a serious threat to its future. And now is the time to stand up and be counted, before it's too late and decisions are taken that tear the heart out of our communities.

When Defence Secretary, Des Browne launched a wide-ranging review of Britain's naval bases he warned that 'radical reductions' could be on the cards. Many fear that one or more of the country's three naval bases could be closed.

The News is campaigning to make sure that doesn't happen to Portsmouth.

And we need you, our readers, to help us keep this area where it belongs – at the beating heart of the Royal Navy.

Our aim is to:

Secure the long-term future of Portsmouth Naval Base

Oppose cuts that would undermine its position as the home of the navy

Ensure it stays a thriving, efficient base that is home to the bulk of the British fleet

How you can help:

E-mail us your views on the future of the navy. Please include your name and address if you want your letter to be considered for publication in The News.

You can also help by downloading our Hands Off petition here and collecting signatures.

Portsmouth South Lib Dem MP Mike Hancock said: 'I think it is an excellent campaign, true to the traditions of The News to get behind issues affecting the city and, for that matter, the Royal Navy. You have got my fullest backing.'

Havant MP and Conservative shadow cabinet member David Willetts said: 'I strongly support The News campaign to keep the base at Portsmouth.

'It's the headquarters of the fleet, and with the government having invested so much money in it over the last few years, to abandon any of that would be an appalling waste of public money.'
