How to keep fit and raise key funds too!

Athletes can test their fitness in a challenging triathlon this summer – and raise cash for a Hampshire autism charity.

Officials at Fareham Leisure Centre, on Park Lane, are preparing to stage the event and hope to raise more than 1,000 for the Hampshire Autistic Society.

Assistant fitness manager Kim Cutler said: 'There are a couple of reasons why we're doing it.

'We have held triathlons before and they were popular, and we felt it would be a good way to get people who are already in swimming, cycling and running clubs to come together and compete.

'But it's also an excellent way to raise money for the Autistic Society.'

The triathlon will take place on June 28, with registration taking place at 3pm, though people can also sign up in advance.

It will start with a 400m swimming race at the Leisure Centre pool, followed by a 23km bike race and a 10km run.

Ms Cutler said: 'It's a challenge, but that's what makes it enjoyable.

'We just want people to come together and help raise money in an enjoyable way.'

The race will raise cash through ticket sales – entry costs 15 of which the centre hopes to donate 10 to the society – as well as bucket collections throughout the course from people stopping to watch and competitors raising cash through sponsorship.

Ms Cutler said: 'We have 100 spaces for people, so we hope to raise at least 1,000. We won't be making people get sponsors, but this is a challenge so it's probably a good idea for competitors to see if they can raise money in that way if they want.'

'I'd love to be taking part myself. But it will be good to oversee the competition.'

Kerry Preston, of Hampshire Autistic Society, said: 'It's really good that the centre's doing this for us.

'We don't know exactly what we'd spend the money on yet, but with our county children's centre in Southampton, and adult centres at Portsmouth and Gosport, we will certainly be able to use it to help the people who need our services.
