Karen goes the extra mile

A friendly smile and helpful advice is all in a day's work for Karen Squires.

The 48-year-old, who works as a cashier at Hovertravel on Clarence Esplanade, Southsea, has been recognised for her excellent customer service and going the extra mile in her job.

Karen was nominated for the T-shirt award by The News' own gardening expert Brian Kidd, who regularly travels to the Isle of Wight and is overwhelmed by the helpful cashier.

He said: 'I find her consistently helpful when arranging for our two grandchildren to travel to and from the Isle of Wight, normally at weekends.

'Young children are not permitted to travel alone unless special arrangements are made and she does a superb job. It's good to know such great people are there.'

On hearing that she had been nominated for the We Can Do It award Karen said: 'I am flabbergasted! I am just doing my job, but it is nice to be recognised and appreciated.'

The mother-of-three added: 'I try to advise people on what would be suitable for them to do on the island. I like to think I go the extra mile and I like to be as helpful as possible. I love my job.

'Most of my life has been working with people and I look forward to coming to work. There is a great team here.'

Karen, who has worked as a cashier for Hovertravel for two years and lives in Ryde, says the fact that she loves her job really helps her to stay upbeat.

'It is a matter of staying calm under any situation. Of course we do get customers who have missed a hovercraft, or are having to queue and they can get irate, but I try to stay calm. It is extremely busy in the summer and people's tempers flare up, but that is just part of the job.'
