NEW blood has been welcomed at the helm of The Dolphin.
Nick Nesmith, 25, was taken on as the new bar manager just over two weeks ago.
He commands the pumps and looks after a team of four bar staff five days a week.
Nick, who grew up in Coventry, was chosen for the job last month after he spotted an advert in the window of the pub as he walked by.
He previously worked as a barman at Gurnard Pines Holiday Park, in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
He then met girlfriend Hazel Mallinson, 30, and the couple moved to Elphinstone Road, Southsea together before Nick began life behind the bar at The Dolphin.
He said: ‘I was delighted to get the job. It’s fantastic to be part of something so historical.
‘The pub is an integral part of the city. I’ve got to know the locals.
‘They’re the ones who make the pub what it is today.
‘Growing up I changed my mind all the time about what I wanted to do.
‘But when I was 16 I remember working in a shop thinking, “wouldn’t it be great to work in a pub?”
In between the long hours at The Dolphin, Nick unwinds by playing football and golf with friends.
Despite having a young head on his shoulders, Nick intends to stay at the Enterprise Inn-owned pub for the long term.
Ms Mallinson, who works at the New Theatre Royal, said: ‘I really encouraged him to pursue this job.
‘We’re both passionate about the history of this city so it seemed like the perfect place for him to be working at.’
