‘Reading and writing are the key to freedom’

ENDORSEMENTS don’t come much better than this.

Simon Callow, critically acclaimed actor and writer, and one of the world’s greatest champions of Dickens, is backing our campaign.

He told The News: ‘Reading and writing are the key to freedom, independence and happiness. Your campaign is the spearhead of this – many congratulations. Dickens would have heartily approved. He used language superbly to speak for all of us. Getting inside one of his novels is an unbelievably enriching experience – whole new worlds open up before you.’

Mr Callow was visiting Portsmouth for the first time today, and was due to treat an audience at the New Theatre Royal to excerpts of his book Charles Dickens and the Great Theatre of the World. He added: ‘I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am.’
