They're rising to the occasion

A company that has battled against the odds in bringing solar powered energy to the wider public has entered The News Business Excellence Awards.

Sunpowered Energy Systems, under its boss Sean Cavendish, designs and installs a range of renewable energy systems for the commercial and domestic market.

Earlier this year it was in danger of going under because of problems within a government grant system that allowed people to gain funding towards the cost of installation.

But once this was sorted out, the company started moving forwards again and has moved into bigger and new premises off Kirpal Road, Portsmouth, away from Albert Road, Southsea.

Now the company is looking at a turnover of more than 1m – which it claims has put it into the category of one of the UK's fastest growing companies.

Among its initiatives the company has become tied up with Formula 1 outfit Honda, which is racing one of its cars to raise awareness of environmental issues.

Honda wants to promote renewable technology and how it cuts carbon emissions. As a result it has installed two of Sunpowered's electric panels on top of two of Honda's MYEARTHDREAM hospitality trucks.

To keep in line with its energy efficiency strategy, Sunpowered is looking to install a rotating sun tracker on the roof of its new building to track the most sunlight.

And now it is looking to develop plans to supply products to capture energy from other renewable sources.

With all this activity Sunpowered feels it is in with a good chance of clinching an award in the business category of The News Business Excellence Awards.

Mr Cavendish said: 'The potential of this company is to double turnover and staff in the next 12 to 18 months. In terms of the year it's been one of turbulence but also it's been an exciting one as we never knew from one day to the next what would happen.

'We've come through it all now and only the other day one of my guys - who had three appointments - came back with three confirmed bookings so I gave him a bottle of wine.'
