Tough job for the shortlisters
It has been yet another strong crop of entries for The News Business Excellence Awards, leaving the judges with even more difficulties in shortlisting the entries.
As the competition has matured and gained in popularity, so the quality of the entries have become better and better.
In total there were 118 entries, representing all types of business and industry, and also showing the strength and vibrancy of the local economy.
As in previous years the entries have been shortlisted to eight per category, with the results to be revealed on the night of January 24, 2008.
The companies nominated for each award category are found on the following pages of this special supplement.
Guest speaker on the night will be Sir Geoff Hurst, and the compere will be BBC South's Sally Taylor.
A Lifetime Achievement award, sponsored by solicitors Coffin Mew LLP, will also be made on the night.
Entries have come from firms as large as BAE Systems to mid-sized companies like STR Group and one-man bands such as the inventor Chris Haines, of Safe-T-Light.
The presentation evening, which is to be held at Portsmouth Guildhall, has become a regular part of the area's business scene.
Companies are keen to test their skills and competitiveness and ways of doing business against others and to raise their public profiles.
Some firms have referred to the night as the business bash of the year, while Business Link and other experts describe the evening as one to pick up contacts.
Tickets cost 45 each plus VAT, and are available by e-mailing carol.benet@thenews.co.uk.
They are limited per company.
