IT’S Ruby Slipper Day tomorrow and a chance to show your support for the Rowans Hospice.

The fundraiser, which is in its second year, will see schools, businesses and organisations in the Portsmouth area sporting red clothing, inspired by Dorothy’s red slippers in The Wizard of Oz.

And The Rowans Hospice charity store, in Fratton Road, Portsmouth, is busy dressing its window for the event.

Store manager Andrew Cordery said: ‘The staff have dressed the window for tomorrow magnificently and we will all be wearing red.

‘It’s an important cause as Dorothy’s Dream gives people the chance to spend their last few days with their family at home. It’s an important service that people are passionate about.’

Proceeds from the fundraiser will go to the Dorothy’s Dream appeal and support its newly-launched hospice at home service.

The scheme gives terminally-ill people the choice to spend their last days with loved ones in the comfort of their own home.

In all, £1m is needed to keep the service going.

Since it started in September, more than 100 people have benefited from the scheme.

Last year, 58 businesses and schools took part and raised more than £7,500.

The hospice hopes to repeat the success.

Dorothy’s Dream appeal was launched in September 2010. So far £766,103 has been raised. But to maintain the service, the remaining £233,870 needs to be gathered.

Businesses and organisations are asked to donate £2 tomorrow to wear red.

School children are invited to make a donation of £1.

The hospice will draw up a roll of honour for those who take part.

To register, visit the rowanshospice.co.uk and fill out an online form.

You can make a donation to the appeal by texting Dream to 70800 to donate £5.

You will be charged £5 plus one message at your standard network rate.
