IT’S the most iconic landmark in the city and next month it will be turned blue for the night.
The team at the Spinnaker Tower in Gunwharf have chosen the Tom Prince Cancer Trust as their nominated charity for the year.
So they are supporting Blue Day, which sees hundreds of people across the area host blue-themed events in aid of the charity.
Ellie Stokes, PR executive for the Spinnaker Tower, said: ‘Our staff voted to support the Tom Prince Cancer Trust because its such an important charity regionally.
‘It’s close to the hearts of the people of Portsmouth.
‘It’s important to us as a landmark for Portsmouth to show our support as well.
‘We are going to be doing bigger and better things this year.’
The tower will be lit up in blue on the night of Blue Day which falls on Friday, April 19 – a day before Pompey’s final home game of the season against Sheffield United.
Staff will be making blue cupcakes and dressing up in blue.
They will also be shaking buckets to encourage customers to make a donation.
Ellie added: ‘It highlights something that I don’t think a lot of people know about.
‘I don’t think so many people know what osteosarcoma is.
‘As a local charity it’s important that we show our support.
‘Our ability to raise awareness gives that support to the Tom Prince Cancer Trust and the family.’
And Ellie said she enjoys the buzz that is created around Blue Day every year.
‘It’s great. It’s the perfect way to really push on one day to raise lots of money for an amazing cause.
‘We are very proud to be part of it. It’s buzzing on the day.’
The trust was set up in 2004 by avid Pompey fan Tom’s family, shortly after his death from the bone cancer osteosarcoma a day before his 16th birthday.
The Prince family want to raise £1m for research into the disease.
