THE engine of a Mercedes car caught fire and the blaze had to be put out by firefighters.

A crew from Southsea fire station was called to Merton Road, Southsea, at 8.30pm on Saturday.

Firefighters found the engine had overheated and the fire was spreading across the bonnet.

Watch manager Ian Jeffrey said the car was badly damaged after they stopped the flames spreading.
