VILLAGERS wrapped up warm and gathered around a pond for their carol service.

The annual event saw around 200 residents of Clanfield gather around the pond to sing Christmas favourites.

Lessons were also read out by children as the villagres tucked into mince pies, and the Salvation Army band played.

It is the seventh event of its kind. The first was organised by the parish council in 2005 in celebration of the pond’s completion – which was restored and is still maintained by volunteers.

Brian Ahern, the parish council’s chairman, said: ‘It was a fantastic night. It brought the whole village together and for many of us it is the official start to Christmas.’
