Century old, and the magic remains

MAGICIAN Frederick Barlow may be 100 years old – but he could still teach showman David Blaine a trick or two.

The centenarian, who lives at Oakland Grange care home in Merton Road, Southsea, celebrated his 100th birthday on Tuesday by conjuring up a party for 20 friends and residents at the home.

Mr Barlow entertained at children's parties and after-dinner events into his 80s and was known on stage as The Great Barlow.

The magician still wows staff at the home by performing tricks – including making items disappear and plucking them from people's ears.

And he doesn't think much of 'stupid' illusionist David Blaine's current stunt of living in a glass box without food for 44 days.

He said: 'Magic isn't what it used to be. The magicians of today think they know it all, but they don't. I think David Blaine is stupid. What he is doing isn't magic and he could kill himself.'
