Charities are quids in thanks to funds from summer show

Royal Navy training establishment HMS Sultan has just handed over cheques totalling �24,328 to 19 local charities following the success of this years Sultan Summer Show. 

All profits from the event have been donated to charities and organisations including: Gosport & Fareham RFC, National Childbirth Trust, Working Age Parkinsons, Gosport Citizens Advice Bureau, Caring Hands, Grange Junior School, Elson Youth Orchestra, Suki Gymnastics Club, Just Girls Group, Stroke Association, Magpies Pre School, HCPT-The Pilgrimage Trust , 5th Gosport Sea Scouts Group, Gosport & District Disabled Sports Association, Naomi House, Lee on Solent First Responders, Sultan Volunteer Cadet Corps, Gosport Boxing Club and Gosport Karate Club.

CHARITIES in Fareham and Gosport have received windfallls after a navy training centre dished out almost £25,000 in grants.

HMS Sultan has handed out £24,328 to 19 charities in the area after its successful summer show this year.

All profits from the family fun were put together and divided among groups who bid for grants to help with projects.

The commanding officer at HMS Sultan, Commodore Mark Slawson, presented cheques to representatives from each of the groups and charities at a ceremony.

Cdre Slawson said: ‘I would like to thank the local community for their continued support in making the HMS Sultan Summer Show a resounding success.

‘I am extremely grateful for your generosity in contributing towards an outstanding amount of money that can now be distributed to these worthy causes.’

The charities and organisations who will benefit from the cash boost are: the Gosport and Fareham Rugby Football Club, the National Childbirth Trust, the Working Age Parkinson’s charity, Gosport’s Citizens Advice Bureau, Caring Hands, Grange Junior School in Gosport, Elson Youth Orchestra, the Suki Gymnastics Club, the Just Girls Group, the Stroke Association, Magpies Pre-School, HCPT The Pilgrimage Trust, 5th Gosport Sea Scouts 
Group, Gosport and District Sports Association for the Disabled, Naomi House, Lee-on-the-Solent First Responders, the Sultan Volunteer Cadet Corps, Gosport Boxing Club and Gosport Karate Club.

The headteacher of Grange Junior School, in Rowner, Gosport, David Jones said his school had been awarded £1,000 from the fund.

It will be spent on musical instruments for the pupils.

‘It’s absolutely brilliant they do this sort of thing,’ said Mr Jones.

‘I was bowled over when I found out we had been chosen.

‘It seems to be a tradition at HMS Sultan and it’s good they do things to help the local community.’

Despite terrible weather at the time of the event in June, the HMS Sultan Summer Show attracted more than 20,000 people to the base, in Military Road.
