Charities rapped for not showing how cash is spent

Former Ukip councillor joins city Conservatives

CHARITIES have been criticised by a watchdog for not revealing where their money is being spent.

The Pompey Sports and Education Foundation is among dozens of organisations named and shamed by the government's Charity Commission for failing to send in information about their finances.

The details are used to update the online public register of charities which allows donors to see how groups are using their money.

Charities who fail to send in the documents face the 'ultimate sanction' of being removed from the register.

Commission chairwoman Dame Suzi Leather said: 'There is no excuse for charities sending these basic documents in late, but by doing so they are not providing the public with up-to-date and accurate information.

'This is not acceptable. Charities are accountable to their donors, to the people they help as well as to us as their regulator, and they must be open and transparent.

'Donors will see on our register of charities if a charity has overdue documents, and may be put off donating by this. It's vital local charity trustees make sure their charities send their information to us on time this year.'

Clare Martin, the manager of the Pompey Sports and Education Foundation, said following a turbulent year for the club the paperwork had been overlooked.

'We are still catching up after everything that happened last year,' she said. 'It is quite a big fund now, so there is a lot of pulling together to get everything sorted out.

'The club holds us in very high regard, and we have always been commended on how thoroughly we monitor our finances.'
