MORE than 30 people got free blood pressure checks during an awareness day.

Vision Express Portsmouth in Cascades Shopping Centre, Portsmouth, hosted the ‘Know Your Blood Pressure Day’ event, which was run in partnership with the Stroke Association.

Following the checks, 15 people were told to go and see their doctors.

Vision Express store manager Julie Harris said: ‘It has been fantastic to have the Stroke Association here carrying out blood pressure
checks.

‘Early signs of stroke can manifest as vision disturbances, and many people don’t realise the breadth of health conditions we can identify through an eye test.’

Figure show about 3,500 people, which is 1.5 per cent of the population of the Portsmouth NHS catchment area, are survivors of strokes.

Ms Harris said up to 60 per cent of stroke survivors experience visual problems, but one in three did not know about the problem or that treatment was available.
