DARREN the dinosaur roared into a supermarket, scaring people into parting with cash for Comic Relief.

The enormous model – from the BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs – delighted customers of Sainsbury’s, in Farlington, with its big red nose. Children queued up to have their photo taken with the scary T-Rex the symbol of Comic Relief.

The charity’s big day is on Friday when people across the area will be doing something funny for money.

Earlier in the day Darren visited Highbury Primary School, in Cosham, where children made caveman outfits using shopping bags.

Mum Beverley Rimmer, from Copnor, took her son Dylan Keating, three, to have his photo taken with Darren at Sainsbury’s yesterday afternoon.

Dylan said: ‘The dinosaur was really funny. I loved his red nose and I wasn’t scared at all but my friend was.’

Beverley said: ‘It looks great and kids love it.

‘We’ve all given a donation so the children could have their photo taken with it.

‘Everyone is really excited about Comic Relief.

‘Willows Nursery, where my son goes, is going to be doing fundraising.’

Store manager Phil Bridgwater wore a green dinosaur outfit and cajoled other staff members to dress up as cavemen.

It’s the latest in a long line of madcap things staff at the store have been doing for the charity. Last month Phil challenged Portsmouth champion swimmer Katy Sexton to a race in the pool – and although she had to balance a cup of water on her head, she still won..

Phil said: ‘We’ve had some good fun and all the staff readily support what we do for Comic Relief because it’s a great charity. They are good sports and stood out in the cold in fancy dress even though it wasn’t exactly the warmest day of the year!’
