A FORMER soldier is making his way through the area on his epic 6,500 trek around Britain.
Christian Nock, from Lichfield, Staffordshire, set off from Blackpool in August and is sleeping rough along the way.
He is raising money for Help for Heroes and has raised nearly £10,000 so far.
His trek is expected to take between two and three years and he relies on the goodwill of others, donating all his money to charity.
Christian served as an infantryman in the Staffordshire regiment for eight years and personal circumstances saw him on the brink of homelessness.
Christian, 38, said: ‘I thought if I was going to be homeless, then I would do it style and raise some money for a good cause. I will not quit, I’ve got nothing to go back to. This trek has restored my faith in humankind. There are so many stories. It’s fab.’
He crossed over the River Hamble on Saturday and called in at the Rising Sun pub in Warsash, where he collected his ninth pair of walking boots. He set off from Warsash on Saturday afternoon and spent the night in Gosport.
Christian does not use public transport so will not be taking the Gosport ferry nor the Hayling Island ferry, meaning he will be walking through Fareham and around Portsmouth over the next few days.
He regularly posts Facebook updates about his route, and photos of his companion Sebastian – a soft toy crab.
