THE dockyard lit up with festive cheer yesterday with the switch-on of its Christmas lights.

HMS Warrior, one of the key attractions in Portsmouth’s Historic Dockyard, was the main draw.

Arranged around the ship’s three masts in a distinctive Christmas Tree pattern, the lights form part of Portsmouth’s Christmas celebrations.

Lincoln Clarke, CEO of Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, said: ‘The Christmas lights on HMS Warrior have become an iconic landmark for both the city and all of us at Historic Dockyard.

‘It’s an annual tradition we are proud to continue. The switch-on marks the start of festivities for us and our visitors on the eve of the Victorian Festival of Christmas.’

First commissioned in 1861, HMS Warrior was one of the world’s first fully iron-hulled warships and, following a lengthy restoration after retiring from naval service in 1979, has thrilled and educated visitors to the Historic Dockyard, both young and old.
