PEOPLE in Gosport are being encouraged to take advantage of a free service to recycle Christmas trees.

Gosport Borough Council opens the scheme up to all residents.

After the festive season, residents are asked to put the tree outside their house in a visible location by 7am on the normal garden waste collection day between January 9 and January 20.

Local retailers in Gosport are also supporting the scheme by fixing bright yellow information tags to the real Christmas trees they have for sale.

Councillor Graham Burgess, who is chairman of the community board, said: ‘We are grateful to those traders who have agreed to help us spread the word by fixing a tag with the collection instructions to the tree.

‘If it means more people will recycle their tree it has to be good news for the environment.’
