AREAS of coastline in and near Portsmouth are in the running to be included in the first wave of new protected marine sites.

The north west part of Portsmouth Harbour, Pagham Harbour and Selsey Bill are being considered as part of the Balanced Seas marine conservation zones project. A report and leaflet has been released featuring the recommended zones.

Sites will be officially recognised at the end of 2012 after a public consultation.

The zones will protect marine life, including rare and threatened species and habitats.

Project manager Sue Wells urged people to send them their views and said: ‘For the first time in the UK, marine protected areas are being recommended by people with a real interest in the sustainable management of the sea and its resources. This leaflet allows those with an interest in the south east sea to see at a glance what areas are being discussed.’
