Comic Relief cash could be music to the ears of OAPs

RADIO STAR Tony Smith of Angel Radio has welcomed our monster cash giveaway

RADIO STAR Tony Smith of Angel Radio has welcomed our monster cash giveaway

THERE is just over one month to go until the deadline in our monster £50,000 Comic Relief giveaway.

Charities and good causes which help disadvantaged groups have been invited to apply for a slice of the cash.

We have teamed up with Comic Relief to make sure the cash goes to the right organisations and has the maximum impact across our communities.

One of those is Angel Radio, a Havant based station dedicated to the older generation.

Station founder Tony Smith makes sure there is a mix of great music – Angel doesn’t play anything recorded after 1959 – and information and advice for older people.

For many isolated pensioners it acts as a lifeline.

Tony said: ‘We were really excited when we heard about the Comic Relief giveaway. We are definitely going to apply for the full £1,000. We’ve come up with a really nice little project.

‘What we want to do is create a link with nursing homes and sheltered housing where there are sometimes between 30 and 40 people in the building.

‘We will go round with the staff talking to the residents and doing some little recordings about their lives and find out their favourite music.

‘Then we will do radio shows specifically to provide the music that people like.

‘It’s really about forging links so that people do not feel isolated.

‘For example we will say Olive loves piano music and then ask our listeners to suggest pieces.’

‘Obviously we can’t do those sorts of programmes without funding so this would be a brilliant bonus to the older people in the community.’

Scores of charities have already applied but there is still plenty of time to get your application in.

It is a simple process and the deadline is March 16. Groups eligible to apply need to:

· Be working in a disadvantaged or deprived area within the specified boundaries

· Be a small local group with an income of less than £100,000 (in the last year) run by local people

To apply on behalf of your group, go to hantscf.org.uk/grants/available-grants/red-nose-day-community-cash.aspx

Grants will not be awarded to:

· Individuals

· Statutory organisations, including PCTs and schools

· Groups which are not constituted

Grants will not be awarded to:

· Fund buses, minibuses or other community transport schemes

· Fund building costs including access adaptations to buildings.
